Durban – ANC members in KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday denied forming an anti-President Jacob Zuma “camp” as reported by the media at the weekend.

“Comrade Zweli Mkhize, comrade Senzo Mchunu and comrade Bheki Cele have categorically specified that they are fully behind the current ANC national leadership,” said ANC KwaZulu-Natal secretary Sihle Zikalala.

He said reports that KwaZulu-Natal premier Mkhize, education MEC Mchunu and former police chief Cele were against Zuma and the current leadership were desperate attempts by those who were on a campaign to change the party’s leadership.

“We want to state emphatically that the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal has been in touch with the comrades that have been mentioned in the media reports and they have all distanced themselves from the reported ‘camp’ and the plot to isolate some of our leaders.”

On Sunday it was reported that Cele was drumming up support for an “anyone but Zuma” faction in KwaZulu-Natal.

The Sunday Times reported that the former police chief had held meetings with Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe, Arts and Culture Minister Paul Mashatile and anti-Zuma groups.

The Sunday Independent reported that one of the camps opposed to a second term by Zuma met in Sandton last Wednesday.

It reported that Cele also attended the meeting, but he denied being there.

Zikalala said the province would discuss leadership issues once the National Executive Committee had instructed them to do so.

“As we approach the national conference, we urge the media to avoid being used by people who spread lies with a sole aim of creating qualms among our leaders,” he said.

The Sunday Tribune reported that the African National Congress’ provincial and regional chairmen had been warned that turning against Zuma would result in influence over government tender processes coming to an end. – Sapa
