Cape Town has done it again, scooping Top prize in Travel + Leisure’s annual online poll of best destinations and establishments in the world.
Cape Town was awarded the the accolade of the World’s Top City in Africa and the Middle East in the 2012 Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards as well as being ranked fourth overall in Top 10 Cities list. Additionally, Cape Town’s The One&Only Hotel was ranked as the Top Hotel in Africa & Middle East.
By now fans of Cape Town will already know that the city was voted TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice Best Destination 2011, Table Mountain was voted a New7Wonder of Nature and that Cape Town was named the 2014 World Design Capital. But in the past six months the Mother City has racked up quite a number of accolades establishing it as a city full of hidden gems and the ultimate place to live, work and play in, confirming the slogan “You don’t need a holiday, you need Cape Town!”
Cape Town is considered one of the best places in the world for residents and tourists, but don’t just take our word for it, we scoured the world’s largest travel site, which offers honest advice from bona fide travellers, and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive!

The World’s 20 Best Surf Towns list not only profiles the surfing conditions of the various beaches, but also explores activities to do in the area, its social and community outreach programmes, where to stay and, of course, the best times to catch the next big wave.
Tjing Tjing Bar in Cape Town has made the list of the 10 Hottest New Bars Around The World by Conde Nast Traveler. The list profiles the best new drinking and dancing hotspots in the world with Tjing Tjing, in Cape Town, coming in at number four.
CNNGo, the travel wing of CNN International, has listed Cape Town as one of the World’s 10 Most Loved Cities. Says the writer: “We’ve trawled the Internet for media ‘best of’ praise, solicited recommendations from local correspondents, bloggers and travellers, scraped the bottom of every Internet and press barrel we could find for reasons not to include these conurbations, and still came up with what we think is a definitive list of the world’s most loved cities.”
TripAdvisor has named our own Boulders Beach as one of its top 10 truly unique beaches in the world. The beach took eighth place on the list, joining others such as Hyams Beach, Australia; Mineral Beach, Israel; and Punaluu Beach, Hawaii.
Cape Town features prominently in the TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice Hotel Awards 2012, with two establishments featuring in the Top 25 Hotels in the World. Derwent House boutique hotel (5th) and Blackheath Lodge (18th) were recognised for their excellent all-round value, while the Villa Zest Boutique Hotel was voted the Trendiest Hotel in the World.
The South African National Biodiversity Institute’s (SANBI) Kirstenbosch-SA entry won a gold medal at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, in London, UK, for the exhibition Gateways – a botanical journey. It marked the 32nd time SANBI has taken gold during the 37 years it has exhibited at the prestigious flower show.
In a survey of the best cricket grounds in the world, published in the May 2012 issue of The Cricketer magazine, a panel of 40 cricket experts rated Sahara Park Newlands as the second-best cricket ground in the world, after the historic Lord’s Cricket Ground in London.
The Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) was awarded the prestigious IMEX Green Supplier Award at the IMEX 10th anniversary Gala Dinner in Frankfurt.
I ♥ Cape Town, Cape Town Tourism’s Facebook fan page and the leading travel and leisure Facebook page in Africa, has surpassed 250 000 fans (it currently has 254 000 fans on facebook and more than 13 000 followers on twitter). According to social media and digital analytics company Social Bakers, I ♥ Cape Town ranks high among South African brands with growth of just more than 2 000 fans per month.
Cape Town was listed as one of TripAdvisor’s 15 Destinations on the Rise alongside Lagos (Portugal), Cannes (France), Stockholm (Sweden), Moscow (Russia), Turin (Italy) and others. “There is much to do and see in the city of Cape Town, with its gorgeous beaches, scenic natural settings, impressive architecture, and booming nightlife,” states TripAdvisor about this latest accolade.
