After successfully providing free wi-fi to residents and students in the Stellenbosch city centre, the municipality has started rolling out its “internet connectivity project” in Cloetesville, Idas Valley and Kayamandi, the Cape Argus reports. The initiative is a joint operation between the town, Stellenbosch University and Mxit.
Head of the Stellenbosch municipality’s finance portfolio, Pieter Venter, has indicated that farms are next, and said 48 schools in the greater Stellenbosch area would also be connected to the Wi-Fi grid. “By the end of the year, the entire Stellenbosch area will have free Wi-Fi.”
“It certainly is a fantastic initiative in Stellenbosch that gives travellers the optimum freedom to connect to a wealth of experiences. This also applies to our communities that are in great need of connecting to the world of knowledge at no cost. This is the high road that we all should be part of in Africa,” Annemarie Ferns, CEO of Stellenbosch 360 told Tourism Update.
